Our History

Decades of Experience in Global Clinical Research and Innovation

Total Trial’s legacy began as part of FHI 360, an organization with four decades of leadership in clinical research and global development. As an independent CRO, we continue our mission to advance health and well-being around the world. We work with sponsors across the clinical research industry, including public and private medical research organizations, pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, academic institutions, and government agencies. Our established presence on five continents has gained us trusted relationships with investigators, regulatory agencies, and key stakeholders; and provides Sponsors with access to the well-equipped sites and treatment-naïve, genetically diverse populations necessary for high-quality clinical research.

The Total Trials project team has been involved in approximately 500 studies in nearly 75 countries worldwide.

Our team of industry veterans combine their therapeutic knowledge and clinical expertise to help determine where our expertise will have the greatest impact. Every person at Total Trials is passionate about finding solutions to the challenges that have kept life-saving medicines from at-risk populations. We’re problem solvers, forward thinkers and on-the-ground community members, and we’re dedicated to helping our clients achieve their research goals.

Our Evolution

1971

FHI 360 grows out of research at the University of North Carolina to develop safe and effective family planning methods

1980s

FHI 360 expands its scope to respond to the HIV/AIDS epidemic

Clinical Research International (CRI), the first multinational, full-service CRO, is formed by FHI 360

1990

CRI is sold to ClinTrials Research, and the funds are used to establish the FHI Foundation endowment

1999

FHI 360 acquires PharmaLink, which would later become Novella Clinical, growing to employ more than 800 staff

2008

The Global Research Services (GRS) department is formed within FHI 360

2013

Novella Clinical is sold to Quintiles

2019

FHI Clinical is formed when GRS is spun off from FHI 360, effective April 1

2022

FHI Clinical acquires the clinical trials business of Triclinium Clinical Development Proprietary Limited (TCD), a full-service, South Africa-based CRO, effective February 8

2025

FHI Clinical becomes Total Trials, a fully independent mission-driven CRO.
